Can a person with a natural rubber latex allergy cross-react to Cassava?

Answered by: by Don Beezhold, Ph.D.Chief, Allergy and Clinical Immunology Branch

Cassava is a root crop that is widely eaten in South America. We have looked at Cassava by Western blot, and found a protein that cross reacted with latex. It appears to be a Hev b 5-like protein.
