Is there natural rubber latex in mattresses and furniture cushions?

Answered by: Don Beezhold, Ph.D.Chief, Allergy and Clinical Immunology Branch

There are reports from Germany about reactions to latex foam mattresses. There aren't as many reports in the United States because there is little natural rubber latex (NRL) foam used in mattresses here. If chairs and sofas contain NRL foam, they could potentially liberate NRL allergens unless they are covered with an impervious material.
